The School comprises approximately
45 full-time academic staff engaged in teaching and research across a wide area of sub-disciplines
within economics including econometrics and economic history.
The School undertakes the majority of teaching in the Bachelor of
Economics Degree (BEc). Students can also major in Economics within
the Bachelor of Commerce Degree (BCom), the Bachelor of Arts Degree
(BA) and the Bachelor of Social Science Degree (BSocSc). There are
several combined degrees in Economics including BA BEc, BSc BEc
and the BEc LLB.
Programs
The School has been consistently
ranked first amongst the major Australian Universities in the quality
of its teaching in Economics. The School is involved in teaching
in three postgraduate degrees. The Master of Commerce (MCom) is
a Business School-wide degree in which students can choose a number of subjects
in Economics, or can choose to major in Economics within that degree.
The MCom (Hons) is a research degree consisting of some advanced
coursework plus a thesis. The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) is a research
degree involving advanced coursework and a thesis.
Research
Research in the School
is of a high calibre by both national and international standards.
The School ranks either first, second or third within Australia
on a variety of research performance criteria and members of the
School play an important part in the policy issues and debate within
Australia. The School frequently has important national conferences
in economics, econometrics and economic history, and has an active
seminar series program and a program of one-day workshops. Many
of the members of the School play a prominent role in relevant societies
and provide senior advisory roles to government and business. The
School also attracts considerable research funding from the Australian
Research Council and other bodies.
Centre for Applied Economic Research
The Centre for Applied Economic Research (CAER) promotes multidisciplinary research, with a primary emphasis on applied economic
research relevant to policy issues. The Centre also conducts conferences and workshops and publishes an academic journal, the Economic and Labour Relations Review, which is published jointly with the Industrial Relations Research Centre.
Australian Institute for Population Ageing Research
The Australian Institute for Population Ageing Research (AIPAR) as a UNSW Research Institute is to capitalise on the strong interest and commitment by UNSW researchers and potential private and public sector, which has been reinforced through the recent NHMRC/ARC and ARC Linkage Grant successes.
Centre for Pensions and Superannuation
The Centre for Pensions and Superannuation (CPS) brings together a number of pension specialists whose core interests lie in the fields of public and labour economics, finance, and actuarial studies.
Centre for Energy and Environmental Markets (CEEM)
The Centre for Energy and Environmental Markets (CEEM) at the University of New South Wales brings together researchers in UNSW and partner organisations with the key objective of providing Australian research leadership in the interdisciplinary design, analysis and performance monitoring of energy and environmental markets and their associated policy frameworks.
Economic Design Network (EDN)
The ARC Economic Design Network (EDN) is a research network funded by the Australian Research Council to support research and scholarship in economic theory and experimental economics, and in their application to the design of economic policy.
